Default Wish I Had Done It Correct The First Time

I know this has been mentioned before but I wish I that I had built my layout to the largest radius which I could place in my yard. With the hobby developing and producing the longer passenger and freight cars and not to mention the need by larger Live Steam engines needing larger radius curves (ten foot minimum) I had to move six hundred concrete blocks and bring in more truckloads of earth and gravel to get the desired results for my layout. To all those who did it right the first time ...I congratulate you. Here is a short video of an electric and a live steam unit being tested upon completion. Now for the details.... to fill in the voids and make it look like a Garden Layout. Hope to read about your efforts in the garden.

Good video Tac, and nice layout. When I started in this hobby in the 90's a wise man recommended to me never to go less than 10ft curves, so i never did!! But he forgot to tell me I was going to get older, and my knees and legs were going to get worse, that I should also have a raised layout (at least 36") so now I, like you will probably sometime hopefully in the near future have to raise my entire layout so it isn't so painful to be able to run my trains. I have taken steps to make it easier the way it is, leaving rolling stock set up in my garage, where I can just back up to the main lines, only pulling my engines in during the winter, and such. I may raise one loop, and eventually have one 3ft high, and then have a switch off to the ground level loop from there enjoying both worlds as I see fit.

That's an excellent layout. And you did a great job capturing it on video.

Looks good Peter, if/when I move I plan to have some blocks laid and backfilled, as you did.

Raising it all will be a very good idea Jerry and "Blueregal" and I too would have gone higher but there was a limit to how many truckloads of earth I really wanted to bring into the backyard. My layout is about 25 feet by 52 feet. For each level of concrete block( in that size of layout, don't forget settling) one needs approximately 18 yards of dirt or one full double axle truckload. Then there is also the matter of more gravel required to fill the blocks. Or...one can put in three foot high posts and crossbraces and place a flat surface on top (composite decking or aluminum 'Diebond' sandwich board.) But then, one does not have a garden in the layout, except maybe a few accents on the sides for scenery. All depends on what is desired. I also have an inner track which does have grades of up to 1.8 % and I use that for my smaller electric units and of course the Live Steam geared logging trains which look good going around the inner bushes, tunnels and tighter curves. I also put out the buildings whenever I have an open house. I willl be putting in small country roads and crossings.

I want to thank everyone for your kind comments.
All the best,

Peter.
