Default questions regarding LGB Stainz, which models have smoke, sound, etc.

Hello. Getting back into garden railroading. Wanting to add a LGB Stainz engine to my fleet. I am a bit confused as some models have smoke and sound, where others do not. Especially confused with the older engines. Also appears some Tenders had sound modules?

Is there some sort of guide or variation on model numbers that clears this up? Goal is to make a nice LGB train, have 4 of the shorter coaches already. Looking to add an engine to pull these.

None of the split case motor blocks had sound, the sound was in the powered tender which has a sound label on each side between the wheels. If you see a lever on the bottom front of the engine then it came with smoke.
No #3 stainz had sound or smoke, however smoke can be added.
Newer Marklin stainz can have sound, smoke, digital and analog running.
Get the engine 5 digit number off the bottom (first digit is always a 2 ) and get an online manual by searching for LGB (model #) pdf such as LGB 2017D pdf

I have one of the old Stainz locomotives with sound. There is a cylinder on the underside of the roof where the speaker is pointing towards the floor that is easily seen from the sides. Not so great for looks and plan some day to paint that speaker enclosure black to see if it camouflages it, but so much to do.

When I mention old it is the pre 1995 models which were the split motor block. If there is a speaker in the molded cab roof then it is an engine made after 1995 and these never had the 'roof' speaker.
