Default Side Rod rivet?

Stainz Loco: bought this one used and the PDO (previous dimwit owner) replaced the fastener that attaches the side rod to the piston slide with a cotter pin. Apparently the rivet or whatever it is fell out or broke. The side rod was bent. That fixed up easy.
Other than ordering up a new assembly, any tried and true solutions?

I was thinking maybe an 00-80 brass screw facing outward, solder the nut on, then trim the screw so it does not foul any mechanism.

Screws have ridges and will chew up the hole they are in. A pop rivit would be better.
